Matthew Smith Hauppauge Car Accident Long Island, NY — Suffolk County Police have charged 20-year-old Matthew Smith of Hauppauge with driving while intoxicated following a fatal early-morning collision that killed a Nassau County police officer, authorities confirmed.

Police say the crash occurred at approximately 6:06 a.m. on Route 347 at the intersection with Alexander Avenue in the Saint James area when Smith, driving a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado northbound, failed to stop at a red light and struck a 2019 Alfa Romeo traveling westbound. The driver of the Alfa Romeo, 42-year-old Patricia Espinosa, a Nassau County Police Department officer, was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Smith and his passenger, 25-year-old John Andali of Centereach, were also transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said. Following treatment, Smith was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated in connection with the deadly collision.

Authorities impounded both vehicles involved as the investigation continues. Detectives are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact the Suffolk County Police Major Case Unit.

The fatal crash has shaken the Long Island community, prompting officials to emphasize the dangers of impaired driving. Funeral arrangements for Officer Espinosa are expected to be announced in the coming days as family, colleagues and residents prepare to honor her life and service.

Smith’s arrest highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to hold impaired drivers accountable in cases resulting in loss of life. Additional legal proceedings are anticipated as the case moves through the Suffolk County court system.
